Every year millions of consumers fall victim to scams sent by post, 

email, text, the phone and internet. Anyone can fall for a scam but 

the elderly are often hit hardest. Research shows that older victims 

are likely to lose nearly twice as much per scam as others. Victims 

are often socially isolated, over-trusting or afflicted by illnesses 

such as dementia and can be repeatedly targeted by the scammers. Many 

lose their life savings and suffer depression and ill health as a 

result.

The scammer uses sophisticated psychological techniques to target 

people who are often the most vulnerable in society. They often 

operate through a ruthless circle of psychological and financial 

abuse. They gain people's trust and exploit fears, insecurities and 

pain to steal as much money as they can from those who can least 

afford it.

Infomercials, for example, shown in the late hours when people are 

tired and their judgment is not as sharp. They often use time limit or 

quantity tactics to lure people in even quicker so they have less time 

to actually consider what it is they are rushing to purchase.

Camera trickery is another advertising trick, pay closer attention to 

what is being shown. One great example comes to mind for a particular 

towel like product being shown all over television. In the main shot 

they show the representative pour liquid on a small piece of carpet. 

in the next shot they lift the carpet slightly to reveal a puddle 

underneath yet when the shot goes back to demonstrate the ability of 

the product the puddle is now gone.
